eitje

at our sleepover address, eldest and youngest were each given two easter eggs - hard boiled eggs that the kids had been allowed to stick stickers on. in no time, youngest's had been munched up but eldest carefully held them in her fine-and-gross-motor-skills-deficient paws in the car all the way home (well, almost). so.... one disappeared under the passenger seat. for the life of me, i could not see it, feel it, smell it (yet!). i moved the seat backward, forward, backward again, until....
oh dear! and eldest was inconsolable....Smiley

so today we went on an easter egg sticker hunt, boiled six eggs, and eldest happily decorated them full with stickers.

she has this habit of taking special things to bed with her..... so when i was absent-mindedly running the bath, all of a sudden i heard an incredible howling downstairs

the poor thing had thought she could take them upstairs in their egg cups, all at the same time of course, blissfully unaware of motor skills fine or otherwise

when she had calmed down she said (still sniffing): 'when we buy our new house mummy, we must buy a house with a really soft carpet'

a sleep-over on the way back to england...

never too young to learn.......

.......about empty nest syndrome! the kids have a 2.5-week Easter holiday. i have to work and i have to travel (florence... hey ho, there are worse places, right?!) so they're spending their days having lots of fun at oma & opa's. over the phone, full of excitement they chat to me about their various adventures. they had a very long bath, they changed the bandage, they fed the goats, they drew dot-to-dot and eldest could even go all the way up to 100 with that (mummy! after 99 comes 100! i can count to 100!!), they fed the goats again, they both sleep in oma & opa's bedroom (not in the same bed mummy, but next to each other. so 'gezellig'!). youngest surprises me by showing an interest in what i am up to: 'are you at work? or are you at home?'

it gives me such peace of mind they are safe and happy. this empty nest syndrome is easily cured: i will fill it with easter eggs to take to the netherlands when i collect my babies :-)

the ugly troll

in youngest's musical, he was given the role of the ugly troll. the little darleenk totally relies on my organisational skills - up to a point. when i had not submitted his costume to the school by the deadline, he chanted on an hourly basis 'mummy don't forget i really need a cushion!' 'mummy i really need my binoculars!' yes....... costumes are not my forte........

the instructions also included a check shirt. hmm. i'm sure i have one in one of the bin-liners filled with hand-me-downs from his cousins that i never get around to sorting out. question was whether i'd have the energy & be able to find it upon my return from the wrong airport in the middle of the night.

Iopted for peace of mind at the seafood bar with a glass of sancerre, airport-bought designer shirt safely in bag and in the knowledge that i will have water&bread for supper for the rest of the month.

today he got to show it off.

watch out for the troll.............

'i'm coming to gobble you up!'

not very convincing, i'm afraid.... far too cute!

you only live once

yesterday it was mother's day in this country. the kids were very excited. mummy, you're not allowed to look under my bed, because it's a secret! mummy, tomorrow it's mother's day so we have to bring you food on a tray - because that's what people do on mother's day, they eat food in bed!

mummy, is daddy going to be here?

no.

(He Who Moved Out Five Months Ago is off travelling for a month)

two very concerned little faces.

'but what about the presents?'

well......... you could make me something........

two very determined little faces.

'no, we have to go to the shop to get them'

so we agreed i would take them to the jewellery shop, hand them my credit card, and wait outside for each of them to select & come out with a beautifully gift-wrapped little parcel.

now the kids were really excited! mummy, if you hadn't had to drive us, we could have done it all by ourselves!
